BTS has taken the world by storm, and can be attributed with the recent rise in popularity of K-Pop in the west. BTS, whose name stands for ‘Bangtan Sonyeondan’ meaning ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts’, is notable for not being signed by one of the big 3 (SM, YG, and JYP). Big Hit Entertainment held auditions for a possible boy band during 2010 and 2011. Before the group even debuted, they gained recognition for cover songs posted on Youtube and Soundcloud.
The group released a trilogy of single albums before finally releasing their debut studio album in August 2014. The group was well received by the public, but real popularity began with the EP The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1. The lead single, ‘I Need U’, won them their first music show award.
The group continued to enjoy success in Korea and internationally, but in 2017, they achieved major stardom on the world stage with their EP, Love Yourself: Her. The album features a collaboration with The Chainsmokers, and has had a song remixed by DJ Steve Aoki, featuring the rapper Desiigner. That same year, the group announced that the name BTS would also stand for the English words, ‘Beyond the Scene’, as a part of their new brand identity. BTS has broken record after record, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
