The massively popular girl group Twice debuted in 2014; the first girl group to debut under JYP Entertainment since Miss A in 2010. The members were chosen through a competition survival show released on Mnet called Sixteen. The group released their debut EP along the single “Like Ooh-Ahh” on October 20, 2017. The video reached 50 million views on YouTube within 5 months, and went on to become the most viewed video of any K-group at the time.
Twice continued the continued their rise in popularity with he release of the their EP, Page Two, in April of 2016. The leading single “Cheer Up” was a monumental success with the masses. It reached number 1 on the Gaon Digital Chart. The group has maintained constant media presence by releasing five more number 1 hits, including “Likey” in 2017, which also reached number 1 on the Billboard World Digital Singles Chart.
Twice takes aegyo to the extreme. While it seems to be working for them, only time will tell if they will be able to pull off a more mature concept. Either way, the group has released two chart topping albums and sure to release more.
